U. S. Steel and DuPont Launch COASTALUME Product

COASTALUME, North America’s first GALVALUME material designed and warrantied for coastal settings, was launched by United States Steel Corporation (“U. S. Steel”) and DuPont.

The new COASTALUME product combines the strength and self-healing properties of two legendary American industry leaders. GALVALUME material from U.S. Steel with a DuPont Tedlar PVF film barrier that resists seawater corrosion, UV damage, cracking, impact, and other factors. The collaboratively developed product is only offered through U.S. Steel.

Today, about 40%[1] of Americans reside in coastal areas, which are particularly vulnerable to environmental conditions such as hurricane force winds and ocean spray. The two companies achieved a first-time combination of these two materials. U.S. Steel and DuPont have created a maintenance-free roofing solution that provides the durability and dependability required in coastal residential and commercial construction. Steel solutions are further elevated for builders, architects, and homeowners with the inclusion of a best-in-class warranty and a timeless style, including a wide range of color and finish options.

“American-made steel stands above steel made anywhere else, and steel is infinitely recyclable, unlike other building materials,” according to Robert Kopf, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at U. S. Steel. “With our new product COASTALUME we were able to combine our steel with the proven performance and durability of DuPont Tedlar PVF film, and fully address the unique needs of coastal construction, which must withstand the toll that wind and saltwater inflict over time. This was engineered to address that need head-on.”

Tedlar film excels at repelling sea water and salt spray when applied directly on steel coils, retaining color integrity even after prolonged sun exposure. Its mix of durability and versatility is unrivaled, and it is available in over 30 distinct hues, including metallics, wood textures, and stone finishes.

“DuPont invented Tedlar over six decades ago, and today it remains the industry gold standard in protection because of its flexibility, durability, and reliability,” DuPont Tedlar Vice President Sales and Marketing Matt Urfali remarked. “Tedlar’s performance and ease of maintenance have rightfully driven several exciting applications over the years, including use by the solar industry, aerospace, and even NASA. Now, by combining the resilience and flexibility of Tedlar with the strength of U. S. Steel’s GALVALUME material, this is the next breakthrough for the demanding construction market along the coast.”

COASTALUME’s product guarantee is unique in that it covers products put up to 300 feet from breaking waves, big bays, marshes, and other coastlines. The exclusive warranty also includes up to 50 years of finish warranty and 25 years of substrate warranty, which is an industry first.

DuPont and the U.S. Steel has over 340 years of combining scientific and industrial expertise. Representatives from both the United States and Canada will reveal the COASTALUME product during the 2023 METALCON Industry Trade Show, which will be held October 18-20 in Las Vegas, Nevada. DuPont and S. Steel. BIEC International Inc. owns the trademarked trademark GALVALUME material.
